@Jackie - NGJ and the Pearls have not directly addressed the issue of children with disabilities. We do recognize that there can be physiological reasons for behavior and if there are, then they should be addressed.

@Rose - Please pay attention to the article and the type of anger that is described. Never is it indicated that all anger is bad, just the anger described and then goes on to demonstrate how to deal with that kind of anger for the purpose of not letting the anger continue and eventually rule the child

It sounds like you feel anger is a bad thing? If a child is acting out and not being respectful, yes, then you need to find a way to help him/her see a better way to express themself. HOWEVER, scaring a child into believing they should never be angry is WRONG! That leads to depression. Depression is ANGER turned inside out. A child needs to learn that ALL emotions are okay, but that there are right and wrong ways to show those emotions. DO NOT listen to someone who states they can "break his anger in two days. He would be too scared to get angry." This kind of lesson will hurt the child in the long run and possibly KILL the child!

I've read a few of your articles, and as a special education (and early childhood) teacher, I have to ask: What about a child who has a disability? Do you believe that all poor behaviors are simply lack of obedience, or do you believe that some children have physical or psychological differences that cause them to act a certain way? I should also add that, if you addressed this in an article already, I haven't read it yet, so my apologies if this is already answered somewhere.

I totally agree with Denise. I grew up in a christian home..and my parents took this kind of advice and I hate them for it. Being an adult..I would never lay a hand on my child and my children are very well behaved. You should be raising your children, not "training them". This is ridiculous,

I agree wholeheartedly with this article and the biblical principles behind it. Parents who waver in their discipline techniques will raise kids who believe the world will bend to their will. I have been guilty of inconsistency and am paying the price with my 7 y.o. I know better and so now I am doing better. If she refuses to eat what is provided, she will go hungry. I do spank but only when time out and redirection fail. There is nothing wrong with spanking when its appropriate and not done in anger. We always discuss why the spanking was needed.

@rhonda - Loving discipline is one of the purest expressions of selfless parental love, doing what is best for the child, not what is easiest for the parent.

@Denise - No one is advocating beating, starving a child, or child abuse as you are falsely accusing. What is being presented is effective child training in dealing with totally unacceptable attitude and behavior.

It is my pleasure that my children are free and happy, and unrestrained by parental tyranny. Love is the chain whereby to bind a child to its parents.
