That was a wonderful and helpful insite. But I also would like to know how to stop my 4 year old from sucking her thumb. My husband said this is one issue that I should not spank, but rewarding her for stopping the habit did not work like I had thought. I know it is a security/comfort for her. Please give me your wisdom and advice.

Well said. Thank you for your very practical, down to earth examples and explanations. I wish I had your gift of creativity. Is that something that can be developed, or merely imparted?
I love the example about getting rid of the pacifier, but what do you do for thumb sucking?
