I know its been awhile since previous posters have written, but to anyone reading these comments....
Sure you have depression and you feel like the only way out is medicine. You are on medicine and it worked, or fill in the blank. The thing is, diet, a good wholesome diet free of food coloring, and additives, high fructose corn syrup, and excess sugars, free of man made oils like corn oil, and soybean oil. Raw milk that hasnt been pasteurized and homogenized will do wonders!
If you havent tried that, try it first!! Raw milk alone has been proven to cure chron's desease among other things. You may be amazed how great you will feel just eating how God intended you to eat!!
Being in Gods word everyday, and blessing others, even though you dont feel like it helps as well. Until you have tried this advice, dont say it wont work, if its not working, your not doing it!!!

No prescription drug ever CURED anything. One agenda is to get you hooked (preferably for life) to any kind of Rx which will produce a recurring income to the pharmaceutical industry. Ever wonder why annual physical examinations are "free" under most medical insurances? It's because they want to test/diagnose/FIND your Rx-for-life (and they WILL find something---"high blood pressure; elevated PSAs," etc. Read/re-read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley to see where it's all headed. Come, Lord Jesus.

"I am not a doctor... Again, it is only a lay-person's opinion, based on information available at the local library."

Then you admit that your "opinion" has no basis in medical fact, and it is not your place to dictate which medicines people use.

"Stop playing pity party."
This is quite possibly the worst advice you can give to a depressed person.
Thousands of sufferers each year kill themselves, and thousands more attempt it. Some people who suffer from severe depression find themselves unable to even move or speak for months on end. If all they wanted was your pity, they wouldn't go to such lengths.

"Take command of your life. Choices you made caused you to be sick."
You're wilfully ignoring other major factors such as genetics and upbringing.

"The answer requires more than just a pill or a chat with a health expert."
I'd sooner trust a health expert, and the vast majority of psychiatric medicine, than my local library (or, indeed, an overly opinionated layman on the Internet).

"get out into the sunshine with a heart of thanksgiving, running, jumping, and laughing, whether you feel like it or not."
This is a lovely idea in theory, but as I mentioned earlier, this just isn't possible for people who are so crippled by their illness. Once they are on the road to recovery, that's great advice. But they need medical care.

I have suffered from bipolar 2 disorder and depression for the past ten years. My mother - who is helping me write this - has been a doctor at the local psychiatric hospital for over 25 years.

Finally, let me ask you this: If someone you knew had broken their leg, would you tell them to go to the library and fix it themselves?

He is sooo right. My eldest son was diagnosed severe ADHD I refused to medicate, he has been trained to control himself and does so much better than a lot of others medicated boys. As for me I started pre-menopause 10 years earlier than most women and found the mood swings to be excrutiating, instead of jumping into medications like the doctors wanted I used a multi-vitamin with a good B vitamin complex and a touch of progesterone cream the hormone I am barely producing) and my moods leveled out compleately, and the greatest part, more energy and no side affects. Thank you for this article, I feel alone on the anti medicating issue where I live.
