Jennifer, we had the same problems with our 3rd - a fear of water/bath. We started splashing around in the pool as it was almost drained for the summer. Then she had 1 inch baths and wet washcloth hair rinses. I increased the water play outdoors and water level indoors, now she is 7 and a great swimmer who likes being underwater as much as above! Our youngest, 4 1/2 old boy now, outgrew his terror of ear cleaners after a hilarious ear wax contest. I let him watch me clean his sister's ears. I help him clean his own ears and mine too if he seems resistant. "Wow! Let's show Daddy what we found and how clean your ears are!" ...whatever works! Talking about interesting things totally non-related helps distract them too, especially questions about what they like. Get books from the library about the ear and animals that like water, whatever related to the fear. Take a child afraid of dogs to a dog show where they are doing tricks like leaping off a dock into the water or dressed up, or interacting gently with other animals (ours likes to cuddle baby poultry). In my opinion, it's not rude to ask in advance for someone to put their dog away before you arrive and only let out if you want. We do or people's shoes get tinkled on or little ones bumped over or annoyingly licked in the face- gross! If I was that short, I wouldn't like dogs much either. Those teeth are kind of frightening too. There are lots of books and morally safe videos about dogs to enjoy together. A friend's well behaved therapy dog might help. You can read a book to a therapy dog in the library some places. Avoid all untrained dogs if possible until exposed to many sweet, trained ones. Tell your child of a dog's loyalty, forgiveness, eager friendliness, great listener attributes, lack of judgementalism, etc. If only they wouldn't eat or roll in yucky things...

I love this suggestion, however, am unsure of how to translate it to my own daughters fears. My daughter is about two and a half and her father since she was very young has played with her in the bath by putting the wet washcloth over her face or dumping the water over her head from a cup. Lil would get playfully annoyed and proceed to play. In the past year, she now has trouble allowing me to rinse her hair from the cup or even from lying in the water. Also, she will go into hysterics when I try to clean out her nose and ears with q-tips which is a common annoyance to young children. I can tell, though, that underneath there is an honest fear but also an authority issue. How would you suggest handling this? I would greatly appreciate it.

Great idea... what about fear of dogs? our 2-and-a-half year old is scared to death of them, even of tiny, inoffensive ones.
But we would not rather like her to by unwise and get bitten by a big one. Actually, my husband does not trust them very much either.
What do you recommend us to do?
