@NGJ Staff:

Though you have included a disclaimer about "views expressed here" not necessarily being "your" views, it seems clear from your blatant defense of Mr. Pearl what your views are.

@Everyone else:
I agree with Scott. I have read, reread and read yet again the words of Mr. Pearl and I see clearly from my understanding of English: " If an adult swings his or her hand fast enough to cause pain to the surface of the skin, there is a danger of damaging bones and joints." The implied subject of "cause pain to the surface of the skin" is CLEARLY the hand of the adult, given how this is written. Furthermore, "there is a danger of damaging bones and joints" is also, by extension of the previous thought, CLEARLY applied to the hand of the adult.

I have three children and at times have spanked each of them. ALWAYS with my bare hand and ALWAYS on their bottom. My kids are happy, well adjusted, obedient Christian kids that impress people everywhere we go by their outgoing personalities, their manners and their respect for each other and those around them.

I've seen and know kids disciplined with Mr. Pearl's techniques and let's just say, "the proof is in the pudding." They are extremely well behaved with mom or dad around but when mom and dad aren't there, look out! One young boy (5 years old) that I've experienced this with first-hand is awful to his peers, very physical to the point of being abusive (punching and kicking) and he's also awful to adults, such as his Sunday-school teachers (who don't have authority to "discipline" or "train" him the way mom and dad do, so why would he listen?) when mom and dad aren't in the immediate vicinity.

Mr. Pearl, while his intentions may be good, is misguided, at best, in his advice to others. The model put forth is simply a model of complete domination, not one of love and mutual respect. And it is certainly not the model of parenting set forth by God in the bible.

My thoughts are simple:
1) The ONLY book acceptable for child-rearing advice is God's word; the Bible. All else is simply man's twisted influence and incorrectly applied translation.
2) Mr. Pearl's "techniques" are barbaric and clearly dangerous in the hands of those with lesser intelligence and/or poor discernment.
3) The only suitable use for the 1/4" plumber's supply line that you "hang around you neck" is to attach the millstone before you cast yourself into the sea.

@Scott Stevens - Re-read the statement. It is referring to causing injury to the child, not the parents' hand. This invalidates your argument and by your own statement would validate "anything else Mr. Pearl might have to say about rearing children."

@Paul & NGJ,
This is all very silly. I think a lot of your ideas about showing kids to work and getting into their heads and paying attention to them are very good but this whole "child training" and attempting total domination is a seriously bad idea put into the hands of the moronic and uneducated public. How could these Schatz's have the ability to home school when they don't seem to have the tiniest amount of common sense that they are killing a child? I think something has been seriously lost in translation regarding the rod and the staff. I don't believe for one minute that Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, with all knowledge about Heaven and Hell and Earth and past and future would ever reduce himself to talking about switching the bottom of a child. I'm sure he was talking about something more important.
