My heart SO beats together with the rhythm of this beautiful article ! By Divine Grace I've discovered the principles of 'unschooling', after I began to 'panic' about my own ability to 'formally homeschool'. (In the process of praying, searching and learning, God healed a few childhood issues of my own that didn't know I had !!) Now, because we've learned how children learned, how God created them to be eager and naturally inclined to learn, our whole life as a family is one of happy discovery and unconscious learning. Letters and numbers are fun and is used mostly in games, wordplay and songs throughout the day.
My oldest girl had the unhappy experience of 'cold turkey' potty training, because of my ignorance. Our boy potty trained himself by watching his sister having all the fun while his diaper had to be changed. I only learned about baby potty training after he was 3 months old and still I did not introduce him to the potty other than watching, till he wanted to start trying. Our baby girl has been introduced to the potty since about two weeks of age and at two months, she would fuss to be taken ~ an absolute amazing and delightful experience for all of us, complete with two little fans peering over her bare legs, encouraging her and applauding her when there is success. And of course far less messy diapers for mom to clean, yay !
We can really testify that 'fun learning' has an additional benefit of creating joyful bonding between parents and children, because we discover together, we look up and search for answers together and we sometimes create our own tongue-in-cheek answers and have a good giggle about it. Just this afternoon our girl (5) asked how much layers of skin do we have - this ended up in the whole family hurdling in front of the computer, searching and finding answers about the anatomy of the human skin and we got more than just our answer.
I am soooo extremely thankful unto God for all we've learned from various sources, but a great big bite of the pie came from Pearl Road. God Bless,
