Bible Questions with Michael Pearl
Episode 002: How can I be sure if I'm saved?

By Michael Pearl

Episode Transcription:

Michael Pearl:  All right, here I am, Mike Pearl, and Jared is sitting behind the camera. We're going to answer your Bible questions today. I have not seen these. Jared, what's the first question?

Jared:  I know what scripture says about Jesus. I believe he bore my sins, died, and rose again. Sometimes I feel very secure in my salvation, but other times I'm quaking in fear of eternity because I'm not sure I'm saved. What gives?

Michael:  All right. I like that question. Some people would give you four or five verses from the Bible, something like John Chapter three or 4, where he says, "He that believeth on him is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18). He that believeth is not condemned but has everlasting life. And then they would say to you, "Do you believe God's a liar?" Well, no, God's not a liar. "If God's not a liar and he says if you believe, you've got eternal life. Do you believe?" Yes, I do. "OK, therefore unless you're going to call God a liar, you've got to believe you have eternal life."

And so that's kind of a mind game that some people might get you to play with yourself to have confidence. So you try to tell yourself that you've complied with all the demands of believing and therefore you must be a Christian. I've known people that wrestled with that for three or four years, or 10 years, or 15 or 20 years, before they finally got saved.

Listen, when you know the Lord Jesus Christ, you don't have those continuous gnawing doubts. Now I do know some people who've been saved and have had some doubts, but they're always reconciled one way. The doubt is always resolved one way. And that is from hearing the Gospel and believing it.

You get saved by hearing the Gospel and believing, and you get assurance by hearing the Gospel and believing. Same place you get saved is the place you get your assurance. So what you need to do is hear more of the Gospel.

Now, 10 minutes, 15 minutes is not going to suit you. What you need is to get the Book of Romans and go through it. We have online free for you the Book of Romans, teaching all the way through it. I guarantee you, you listen to Romans Chapter 1‑8 online, listen to it carefully, and when you get through you will know whether you're saved.

And if you're not, you will have what it takes to be saved. And if you're saved, you'll be able to rejoice with confidence.

See, faith is not in the abstract. Faith is not some resource I have within that reaches out and grabs a hold. It's not the hands of the soul. Faith is my response to facts. Faith is the inevitable response to facts. Facts you get from the word of God. You don't get facts from within, you get them from without, from the word of God.

Someone said it's like faith, facts, feelings. You don't have the feelings of being saved, and you're wrestling with that. Well, go back to the facts. Facts, faith, feeling. The facts come first. And the facts are what you get out the word of God. Not your experience, not what happened to you, but what Jesus Christ did on your behalf.

So go back and get those Romans free and follow it all the way through and you'll come to confidence in your salvation.
