Bible Questions with Michael Pearl
Episode 016: Will all be saved?

By Michael Pearl

Episode Transcription:

Michael Pearl: Alright. I am Michael Pearl, and I am here to answer your Bible questions again. Jared is going to read us a question. I have not yet seen the questions. So, Jared what is your first question?

Jared:  "My mother believes that all will be saved eventually. She excuses and misinterprets scriptures dealing with hell. How serious is this?"

Michael:  "Universalism" that's called, and it is the belief that none would ever be lost. It's not a misrepresentation or misunderstanding of scripture, simply because there is such an abundance of scripture that teaches that many will be damned, and that "The smoke of their torment will ascend up forever, and ever," Jesus said. So, she doesn't believe the words of Jesus. She doesn't believe what Jesus said. Now, I would like to believe what this woman does. It would delight me. In fact, one time when I was about 19 or 20 years old, being greatly troubled by the doctrine of hell, I decided I did not want to believe it.

So, I spent about a year, studying the Bible and other literature. I got the Jehovah's Witness literature, since they don't believe in hell, and looked to see what their arguments were. I got literature by some of the other cults, and looked to see what their arguments were.

I sincerely wanted to throw the doctrine of eternal suffering out. I would still like to. If you can show me from the scripture, then I would be glad to get rid of it. I'm not one to be abashed about believing something differently from how other people believe it, so I would readily cast that doctrine aside.

But after a year of examining the scriptures and opening myself up to what anyone else had to say, I concluded that if I am going to believe the Lord Jesus Christ, I'm going to have to believe in hell just like I do heaven, because he spoke twice as much about hell as he did heaven. He was very explicit in what he said, and then the apostles and John in Revelation spoke clearly of hell.

So, you just really cannot be a Bible believer. You cannot believe God. You cannot believe Jesus, if you don't believe that many will be damned as the scriptures teach. This must be 500 verses in the New Testament that would lend us to believe that, and nothing in the New Testament that would give us hope otherwise.
