The First Works

June 17, 2024

In AD 60, Paul wrote his famed letter from Rome to the church at Ephesus. This is easily one of his most encouraging epistles. He doesn't have a single critique for the church, but rather encourages them by clearly explaining who they are in Christ and how they should act on the knowledge that they are unequivocally children of God.

Two years later, Paul writes his first epistle to Timothy in Ephesus by outlining his purpose to the young preacher boy. He says in 1 Timothy 1:5, “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart and of a good conscience, and faith unfeigned.”
Thirty-Four years later in Revelation 2, Jesus writes a letter to that same church, affirming that they are doing everything correctly, save one thing: they have forgotten their first love.
Jesus then goes on to outline the remedy for this most serious malady: “Repent and do the first works.”
If your walk with the Lord has become a dry, religious exercise, your remedy is the same as that for Ephesus—repent and do the first works.
You see, the love of God is not a stagnant pond.
It is a healing stream that is designed to flow from the church to the parched land around you. If your family and your church are not pouring out the love of Christ, then you have forgotten your first love.
The appropriate action is not to feel more, it is to do more.
Not more religious activity, but more loving of others in Christ’s name. The primary way we do this is by telling them the good news of the gospel.
Knowing where to start is hard, but if you're a child of God, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
So, get started. There are some practical steps you can take in this endeavor.
First, make a plan with your family. Decide who you're going to love on this week in Jesus’ name. Gather around in your living room tonight and talk about why it's important to share your faith with those around you. Tell your kids again why Jesus died, and talk about how in John 3:16 he loved the world, not just your family. Ask yourselves, “Who can we reach this week? How can we reach them?”
Next, as a family start praying for boldness and opportunity to do just that. Obtain any necessary resources. This could look like reading materials such as a gospel tract or a New Testament.
After that, you can sharpen yourselves by practicing sharing your faith in role play.
Finally, go and do the first works, and let Jesus love through you!
