Bible Questions with Michael Pearl
Episode 007: What was God's first light source for the earth before he created the sun?

By Michael Pearl

Episode Transcription:

Michael Pearl:  All right, I'm Michael Pearl. I'm here again to try to answer some of your Bible questions. I've not seen any of these, so we're waiting on Jared to read them to us and see what we can come up with. What do you got, Jared?

Jared:  What was God's first light source for the Earth, since the sun was not created until the fourth day?

Michael:  That is a very good question. The answer is I haven't the slightest idea. The Bible tells us that God said, "Let there be light" and there was light. The Bible does not tell us the light source. Some people have speculated that it was some shekinah glory, that the very presence of God had generated a light. I know this one thing, having participated in construction, that when you go out on a job to begin working, there's no electricity. So you bring along with you a generator and you set up your work lights, your work power, and you work off that. Then once your job is all done, then you switch to the main power. So that was God's work light that he brought in. What the source of it was, we have no idea; it doesn't tell us.

Now, some people also speculate that that light that furnished the first two days of creation there was the removal of a canopy that covered the Earth, maybe a cloud that prevented the ambient light from the stars and the planets from reaching planet Earth. So it could be that as the shroud was removed, that light from the universe itself fell upon the Earth.

It also says, to complicate the problem, that the evening and the morning were the first day, and an evening and a morning are made up of the rotation of the Earth and the relationship to the sun, creating an evening and a morning; a dark and a light. So, one period of light, one period of dark made the first day, second day, third day, fourth day, sixth day. Yet there was no sun to make that division.

It could be, too, that God is telling us there the links of the day‑one period of light, one period of dark‑is in reference to what would take place the third day, from that point. But I suspect there was some sort of a work light, some sort of a celestial light source that God used during those first two days. We're just not told.

  1. I think that Jesus, The true light of the world and the creator of the world manifested himself as light at that time before he began His work of creation. God the Father said "let there be light, and The Son was made manifest to the darkness and the darkness could not dispel it! "In Him was life and the life was the light of the world."

  2. I was wondering about that before. Since science tells us that plants can't survive without sun, however plants were created before the sun. I just settled the question for myself that when we build something, we are just keep on building, and when we are done, we just plug it in and watch it work. An other thought is, that as long as the source of all light and life was directly present there was no need for an other light. We also know, that Jesus was present at the creation and the true answer is in St. John 1.
