The family in this story experienced unity of faith, God’s miraculous intervention, and the protection of their local government. But their happy ending stands in contrast to many suffering believers, like those who spend decades locked in shipping containers in Eritrea, are beheaded in Afghanistan, housed in prison camps in North Korea, or have their whole village slaughtered in Nigeria. Even in Pakistan, it is common for the government to look the other way when believers are mistreated. And often God’s miraculous intervention is to comfort Christ’s followers as they endure persecution, so that they can praise him through the pain. When he miraculously delivers—by opening prison doors, or raising from the grave—we know that he is doing something special to advance the gospel.
