Question

Posted May 10, 2013

I’m absolutely devastated by the way my fiancé proposed to me. There are many factors for why so I won’t even go there, I just want to know how I can get over it. I’m sooooo grateful for my man but having this ugly ring on my hand is a constant reminder. I’m usually fine until I’m unable to sleep at night and stay awake crying. I feel so shallow- other people actually have troubles worth crying over. I keep reasoning with myself and it’s still not working. What should I do?

Hi jecizza. One question I have for you… why are you so focused on the ring and how he proposed? If I were to get proposed, I would focus totally on my man. After all, you aren’t getting married just because you get to wear a ring and say that your husband had made an amazing proposal… Marriage is about love for one another, and absolutely NOT on how you get married. I’m sure if he found out about your disappointment he would feel like a loser. I don’t think God intended for that to happen. So I would just pray that you would be able to forget about how he proposed, and for God to give you a heart to give your man love and respect. After all, if you are going to get married, it’s not about him giving you flowers and beautiful jewelry (even though we as girls love that kind of stuff) but about your love for eachother. Anyways, that is my opinion. God bless you!! 🙂

I would have to agree with kingsdaughter….if you have a godly man in your fiance then I wouldn’t worry about how “not ideal” the proposal was…you are blessed to get a man who loves you and the Lord! (I’m assuming he does, since you said that you are so grateful for him…)

My husband has said he wishes he’d done things differently during our courtship and at his proposal. We both wish we’d done many things differently over the course of our marriage. However, after 12 years and counting, we have both matured and learned to show our love and romance for each other so much better than we did at first. I am thankful that he is a man of God who truly loves me, loves our children, and takes care of us. That is truly all that matters on down the road.

p.s. He proposed to me with a 25 cent ring out of a bubble gum machine, with the words, “Will you be sticky with me for the rest of your life?”

p.p.s. I do understand it can be disappointing when we, as young women, have been fed highly romanticized ideas of that amazing moment when a young man finally asks for our hand – and it doesn’t go how you expected or hoped for. I would suggest that every time you feel overwhelmed by that disappointment, begin to give thanks for everything good in your man. Perhaps you can even begin to see why he proposed the way he did – does it reflect something of his personality, such a quirky sense of humor or something else?

p.p.p.s. CONGRATULATIONS!! You are engaged!! I hope you have a wonderful wedding and a truly blessed life! 🙂
